Music and Writing

Music has always been a huge inspiration to me. Some of you guys may not know that I play the guitar and a little piano. Before I was writing I spent much of my younger days working on putting together a band, which never really worked out. As much as I love music, I’m just not much of a songwriter. They just never seem to come together how I wanted.

Writing stories has taught me a lot that I wish I knew when I was trying to write music. You just need to keep writing, keep making your material better, and eventually you will start getting it to sound like what you’ve envisioned in your mind.

Sure it sounds easy, but it’s hard to put into practice. It’s something I still have to remind myself of every day when I sit down and start creating again.

Anyway, since I’ve been writing, music is mostly a way to help me focus. To block out the distractions and inspire a mood that carries into my stories. When I have my headphones in and can work for an hour without interruption, that’s when most of the best parts of my story seem to happen. Each book tends to have its own soundtrack of sorts depending on what I’m listening over those months.

So to share some of that with you I decided to do a feature called Tuesday Tunes where I will blog about a specific album that is currently in my playlist. Some of them may be new, some are old, some of them are famous, and some you probably never heard of. My music tastes are all over the place, and I like to find music that creates the kind of atmosphere of the story that I’m focused on.So, I thought this would be a fun way to bring you guys into the creative process more, and maybe even provide a little background music options for while you read. Also, I’m always looking for some new artists to listen to while I write. If you think you know something I might like, leave a comment and I’ll check it out!
